Our adoption
journey officially began in February 2014. Adoption was this idea that had
always been in the back of our minds since we married in 2006, but it was one
that just sat on the back of the shelf, collecting dust, and taking a backseat
to all of the other things going on in our lives. We had just welcomed our
second child, our son, in March of 2013 and we were DONE. No more kids. No way!
No how! But ya know what? That simply wasn’t a decision that I got to make.
January of
2014, I began to casually follow another couple’s adoption journey. They were
adopting a little girl from India. Late one night, I was scrolling through all
the photos taken at her orphanage and the eyes of a precious boy grabbed me and
pulled me in, never to return. I
felt a calling like never before. This was honestly pretty terrifying to me.
Like I said, I was done. NO more kids! We had discussed adoption in the past,
but never seriously. We couldn’t adopt. We already had two children! Besides, adoption is expensive! We couldn’t
afford to adopt.
Over the
course of the next two weeks, we researched adoption, we researched countries
open for adoption, we researched agencies. All roads led right back to India. We
had a daughter in India. But there was a catch…international adoptions from
India were special needs only. We had a tough decision to make and said yes.
Yes to adoption, yes to special needs, and yes to God’s will for our lives. It’s
amazing to me how God can strategically orchestrate our lives to encounter
certain people, obstacles, and experiences to lead us the way He wishes us to
go. That’s exactly what happened with us. We even had a random mattress
salesman start talking to us about adopting his son…out of nowhere! Clearly not
pertaining to mattresses! J
This was what we were supposed to do. It was abundantly clear.
We began in
February with Children of the World in Fairhope, AL to pursue a match with a
girl, age 1-3. Our timeline is
posted on the blog so you can follow our progress. Every step is one step
closer to holding our baby, so every step is to be celebrated. Thanks for
traveling with us
Abby
